OPENING OF A NEW DESIGN STORE IN LAPLAND, FINLAND

Pirjo Karvonen and Juha Iisak Koivisto have opened their second design store in Northern Finland. The first one in Saariselkä featuring Marimekko and other Finnish design brands was opened in 200. Now a large space filled with light is open at the ski resort of Levi.

’Meet the Artist’ –program at the Nasher Sculpture Center brought the glass birds to Dallas with an Exclusive Wine Reception and two Bird Signing Events, one at the Nasher Sculpture Center Location and second at North Park Location.

At the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, Washington, a team of glassblowers with Anu and master glassblower Arto Lahtinen from the Nuutajärvi Glassworks produced, within the Visiting Artist Program, limited collections of both Toikka and Penttinen Birds as well as some brand new one-off birds by Anu Penttinen. This was the 5th Annual Bird Lovers’ Weekend!

A chain of modern lifestyle stores in four Asian countries has launched a collection of glass products from the Nounou Limit series. The first Friven & Co. store to sell Nounou products is the brand new flagship store on Singapore's Tanglin Road. The new exclusive colours for the glass items have been chosen in close collaboration with Friven & Co designers in order to incorporate the Nounou items to the seasonal colour trends of Friven & Co textiles. The handmade series of glass dishes available are Route, Pixeline, Border and District.

GLASSBLOWING SESSION IN ISTANBUL

Designer talks with introductions to the making of the Cartoon Chicks as well as bird signing were organized in Amsterdam, Maastricht, Rotterdam and Antwerpen.

Helsingin kaupungilla on Saison Finlandaise en France -hankkeen yhteydessä ainutkertainen tilaisuus esitellä ajankohtaista ja korkeatasoista suomalaista kulttuuria Pariisin sydämessä. Saint Sulpicen aukiolle 17.-27.4.2008 kohoavalla helsinkiläistorilla pariisilaisyleisö pääsee tutustumaan tämän hetken kuumimpaan kotimaiseen kärkeen niin taiteen, muodin ja muotoilun kuin musiikin, kirjallisuuden ja kulinarismin aloilta. Nounou Design on tapahtumassa mukana, kuten myös mm. Fokus Fabrik, Lustwear, Tonfisk Design, Paola Suhonen, Jatta Lavi ja Nathalie Lahdenmäki.
Saint Sulpicen aukio sijaitsee Pariisin kuudennessa kaupunginosassa, kautta aikojen trendikkäässä Saint Germain des Près:n taiteilijakorttelissa. Historiallisen kaupunginosan keskellä sijaitsevaa aukiota komistavat 1600 -luvulla rakennettu kirkko L’église Saint Sulpice sekä mahtava suihkulähde. Lukuisat kahvilat ja liikkeet elävöittävät vilkasta aukiota ja sen lähiympäristöä. Välittömässä läheisyydessä sijaitsee myös Pariisin maineikas Taidekorkeakoulu.
Helsinki à Saint Sulpice tapahtuman ajaksi aukiolle pystytetään yhteensä parikymmentä kojua ja telttaa, jotka esittelevät kotimaisia tuotteita seuraavista ryhmistä: muoti/tekstiili, design, taide, ruoka, kirjallisuus ja musiikki.

Uusi lintutaiteilija Anu Penttinen: ”Huumoria kehiin!”
Kuusi persoonallisuutta
Penttisen uudessa lintukokoelmassa lanseerataan tänä vuonna kuusi lintua. Muodoltaan Penttisen linnut tuovat mieleen topakasti seisovat pingviinit, mutta niiden värit hehkuvat tropiikin tyyliin. Pystyasento korostaa lintujen nokkaa ja ilmeikkäitä silmiä; piirteitä jotka tekevät kokoelmasta juuri omanlaisensa.
Abstraktiin muotokieleen tottuneelle Penttiselle lintuhahmojen suunnittelu oli haaste, jonka hän ratkaisi omaperäisesti: “Päätin tuoda lintuihin hilpeää huumoria ja persoonaa. Kokoelmani työnimi on ollut ‘Cartoon Chicks’, (”Sarjakuvatiput”), joihin sain inspiraation vaha-animaatioiden käsinmuovatuista hahmoista ja tropiikin linnuista. Tropiikissa minua kiehtoivat väriltään sekä ilmeeltään hyvin graafiset ja hätkähdyttävät tukaanit. Tukaanien vahvasta nokasta ja persoonallisista silmistä tulikin lasilintujeni tärkeimpiä yksityiskohtia.”
Lintujen hauskat nimet antavat viitteitä eri tyyppien persoonallisuudesta, joten katsoja voi valita, haluaako seurakseen Ippie the Hippien, Cool Joen vai Cottoncandyn. Ja mitä pitäisikään ajatella sellaisten olentojen elintavoista, jotka kantavat nimeä Nightbird tai Snowball? Entä mitä pohtii lintu nimeltä I’m all bananas?
Jos Oiva Toikan linnut ovat kuin hienostuneita akvarellimaalauksia ja Giorgio Vignan kokoelma kuin sarja abstrakteja veistoksia, vievät Anu Penttisen linnut meidät karnevaalien ja katufestivaalien riehakkaaseen tunnelmaan. Valitse oma seurasi.

Nounou Design participated in the largest Furniture & Design Fair in Finland in September, launching three new product groups. The fair itself has gone through a very successful transformation, presenting the new design area called Ahead!. Within this area the organizers, led by Huippu Design Management, Finland, had invited more than 100 Finnish and international design companies, schools and organizations, which together formed an interesting mix of new design concepts by both individual designers and makers but also larger companies and institutions.

The Art in Glass exhibition is a dialogue between Finnish and Swedish glass, an encounter between the spectator and the artist, as well as a presentation of well-known designers who are fascinated by the transparency of glass. This is not only a matter of handicraft, but involves the entire process, where visions, thoughts, experiences, emotions and stories behind the artwork are in the focus.
The invited designers, artisans and artists work independently , without being dominated by a glassworks, facing all the responsibility involved. The era of in-house designers is over. Many of the artists have developed their own technique and refined it further, others work within a broader sector, using several different techniques. Glass is an expensive and demanding material, with a strong tendency of its own. Glass is a challenge, a material that fascinates but is difficult to restrain.
Handmade and Nordic are the collective principles of the objects on display. The objective and main purpose of the exhibition is to bring the spectator into the process, and tell him/her what is going on backstage. The exhibition does not only show the final result, but it presents visions leading to something concrete, to objects made of glass, to Art in Glass.

17 local glassmakers have been invited to make glassworks in the theme of birds and other animals. This exhibition is the first summer exhibition organised by the Nuutajärvi Gallery cooperative and celebrates the most visible and well-known example of Finnish glassmaking tradition, the Bird Collection designed by Professor Oiva Toikka, produced by the Nuutajärvi Glassworks. The invited participants present the variety of glassmaking in the village, from established artists to young emerging glassmakers.

Metro Glass Bowl to Moma
The Helsinki metro inspired glass bowl designed and produced by Anu Penttinen/Noounou Design for Shopforme will soon be available at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Between 28 April and 31 May 2005, the MOMA shop will host a theme under the title ‘Finnish Design Month’, and to celebrate this the museum shop has put together a selection of design objects from Finland.
